On May 6, 1975, an EF4 tornado tore through Omaha, Nebraska, leaving behind a trail of destruction and debris.
The tornado first touched down in northern Sarpy County, just south of Omaha, at 4:13pm. It then crossed the Missouri River and entered Omaha, where it caused extensive damage to homes, businesses, and infrastructure.
The tornado traveled a path of approximately 6 miles, and its winds reached speeds of up to 165 miles per hour. It killed two people and injured 133.
The tornado dissipated once it hit Benson Park at 4:58pm. A flyover of the tornado's path shows the extent of the damage, with homes and businesses completely destroyed.
The original 911 calls from the day of the tornado paint a vivid picture of the chaos and devastation that occurred. One caller reported seeing "a funnel cloud touching down" and another said that "everything is just gone."
The 1975 Omaha tornado was one of the most destructive tornadoes in the city's history. It is a reminder of the importance of being prepared for tornadoes and other severe weather events.
